There are several walks in both the Rhins of Galloway and the Machars are the best ones are published by Dumfries and Galloway Council:

Wildlife & Birdwatching

Wigtownshire is very popular for birdwatchers, due to it's selection of diverse and sometimes unique habitats. From Keekafar you are only a stones-throw away from Loch Ryan - an important breeding ground for wildfowl and waders in the winter, and terns in the summer. From Seabank, you only have to cross the road to the beach to encounter shorebirds, seals and the occasional otter.

There are also 3 reserves in the are well worth visiting:

  • RSPB Wood of Cree - famed for it's pied flycathers, redstarts and otters
  • RSPB Mull of Galloway - cliffs support thousands of seabirds in summer, as well as the odd small raft of puffins.
  • LNR Wigtown Bay - a hotspot for geese and ducks in winter and reed buntings, sand martins, house martins and swallows in summer.
